Wrexham AFC Disability Liaison Officer
Hello, my name is Kerry Evans, and I am the Disability Liaison Officer here at Wrexham AFC. I started the role in January 2018 on a voluntary basis, and it was apparent, very quickly, what a special club Wrexham AFC is. Being a fan-owned club run mainly by volunteers, I think makes us rather unique.
I felt I had a lot to offer to the role as I have been a full-time wheelchair user for 14 years, so I understand the everyday struggles disabled people can face. I started the role with a real passion to make a difference.
In the time I have been at the club we are now Autism Friendly; in fact we are the first club in Wales and also the first business in Wrexham to gain such status. This has been achieved by providing a quiet zone in our ground where families can sit away from the crowd, and we have a familiar face steward who works the area each and every match day. We have provided a quiet hub - a small room with some sensory lighting, books and colouring available to anyone who wants a few minutes away from the game. We also provide a waitress service so people don’t have to queue for hot food and drinks. We are immensely proud to be able to welcome autistic people and their families to every game of the season.
Another big project I have started is wheelchair accessible away travel. It was most important to me in this day-and-age that everyone has the same opportunities. We run this travel so our wheelchair fans get the chance to attend away games. We take four wheelchair users and their carers to ten away games during the season, and in the last game of the season we are taking two adapted minibuses, meaning even more fans get a chance to attend an away day. I have personally committed to raising the funds to keep the service going as it currently runs at a considerable loss.
I never realised just how rewarding this job would be, but seeing the impact I am having on people’s lives is absolutely amazing, and I love the role I play at the club. I am committed to making our community club accessible to all and hold no barriers for anyone.
