How to Relax in the Time it Takes to Boil a Kettle

For many of us, time is a scarce and precious commodity. Fitting in all the jobs, chores, activities and work that needs doing takes up so much of it. Within this cacophony of activity, its easy to neglect our own health and wellbeing. However, even just finding a few minutes each day – the length of time it takes to boil a kettle will do – to focus on yourself will make a huge difference to your daily life and sense of wellbeing.

Relaxation, meditation, mindfulness – so beautiful, so needed, and it doesn’t have to be complicated either. Relaxation and mindfulness are to the head, what physical exercise is to our bodies. If we want to keep mentally fit and stay on top of our game, we need to be able to relax deeply and live mindfully.

Set yourself a challenge. Try this simple technique five days in a row and see if you can notice a positive change.

  • Close your eyes.
  • Become aware of the space and sounds around you.
  • Become aware of your contact with the ground and the weight of your body.
  • Scan through your body, from head to toe, noticing how each part feels.
  • Try not to add any thoughts to this, just observe and move on.
  • Bring your attention to your breath, focus on each and every inhale and exhale.
  • Don’t try to change your breathing, just allow your breath to come and go naturally.
  • If you notice your mind has wandered, kindly and calmly bring your attention back to your breathing.
  • When you’re ready, open your eyes, and continue (more calmly) with your day…
